Host Dry Carpet Cleaner, bleach-free laundry detergent and white vinegar are some safe cleaners for a sisal rug. The cleaner varies based on the type of stain. Avoid shampooing or steam cleaning a sisal rug.
When a sisal rug gets stained, first blot the stain from the outside in with a paper towel. Next, apply the cleaning solution. For most stains, such as pet, food or drink stains, Host Dry Carpet Cleaner works well. Sprinkle the Host powder on the stain, then brush it into the rug. About an hour later, vacuum the powder.
An alternative cleaner involves mixing 1 teaspoon of bleach-free laundry detergent with 1 cup of lukewarm water, then mixing a separate solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar with 1/4 cup water. Apply the laundry detergent solution to the stain, blot and then apply the vinegar solution. Alternate the cleaners, and blot in between applications until the stain is removed.
