Many people think water coolers are automatically clean because fresh water is placed in them regularly. However, Sunbeam and other water coolers contain an interior reservoir, drip tray and screen that must be cleaned regularly. You will need bleach, a bucket, rubber gloves, a sponge and water.
Mix the bleach solution
Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach with 1 gallon of water. Use a larger amount of solution depending on the size of the water cooler.
Prepare the water cooler for cleaning
Unplug the water cooler. Take off the water bottle. Drain any water still in the reservoir into a bucket.
Clean the water reservoir
Pour the bleach solution into the water reservoir. Leave for 3 minutes. Scrub the walls of the reservoir. Remove any interior parts, and clean them in the bleach solution. Drain the bleach solution out of the interior reservoir through the faucets. Rinse the water reservoir with clean water a minimum of four times.
Clean the drip tray and filter
Take out the drip tray and screen. Wash them in the bleach solution. Rinse them thoroughly, and return them to the water cooler.
Add a new bottle of water
Wipe the top of the new water bottle with the bleach solution before putting it into the cooler, and insert the new water bottle into the cooler. This automatically fills the water reservoir. Wipe the outside of the water cooler and the faucets with the bleach solution. Plug the water cooler back in so it can cool the new bottle of water.
