To clean a sponge, soak it in a solution of bleach and water for five minutes. You can also soak the sponge in water and then microwave it on high for one to tow minutes. Alternatively, wash the sponge in a dishwasher on the "heated dry" setting.
- Soak the sponge
Add 3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Place the sponge in the solution, and let it soak for five minutes. If you don't have bleach, soak the sponge in undiluted vinegar for five minutes.
- Microwave the sponge
For an alternate cleaning method, microwave the sponge. Saturate a scrub sponge with 1/4 cup of water, and place it in the microwave. Heat the sponge on high for one minute. If cleaning a cellulose sponge, saturate it with 1/2 cup of water, and then heat it for 2 minutes. Exact timing varies, so monitor the sponge while heating it.
- Wash the sponge in the dishwasher
To clean a sponge using a dishwasher, add the sponge to a regular load. Set the machine to the "heated dry" setting, and turn on the dishwasher.
- Perform weekly maintenance
Clean sponges once per week to prevent buildup of bacteria. Remove any worn or shredded sponges.
