Spills inside a self-cleaning Whirlpool oven are self-cleaned or steam cleaned using the auto clean mode displayed on the control panel of the unit. Cleaning times are adjusted by pressing the auto clean button, and the cleaning cycle begins when the start button is pressed.
When self-cleaning or steam cleaning a Whirlpool oven, the owner first removes the oven racks and stored pans from the unit. Any loose spills can be wiped with a damp cloth and the oven door frame cleaned with dishwashing liquid to make self-cleaning easier. The oven door must be closed securely and windows or exhaust fans opened.
When self-cleaning, the owner presses the auto clean button. The cleaning time is then adjusted based on the extent of soiling. In Whirlpool ovens, there are preset self-cleaning durations of two to 2 1/2 hours for light cleaning, 3 1/2 hours for medium cleaning, and four to 4 1/2 hours for heavy cleaning. Pressing the start button locks the door automatically and commences the cleaning cycle. The oven door is not to be opened until the cleaning cycle ends and the door unlocks.
When steam cleaning, the same steps are followed, with the exception that 4 ounces of distilled water is poured on the bottom of the oven. After steam cleaning, the owner can clean remaining water and debris with a sponge.
