To clean a sofa, brush and vacuum it, steam clean the fabric, and let it air dry for several hours. This method works on sofas with "W" and "WS" care labels. Find an assistant, a brush, a vacuum with an upholstery attachment, a steam cleaner, water and detergent.
- Brush the sofa
Use a dry cleaning brush to remove surface dirt and debris.
- Vacuum the sofa
Attach an upholstery brush to your vacuum cleaner. Remove and vacuum the cushions, vacuum the underlying fabric, and then enlist a helper to tip the sofa onto its back. Vacuum the underside, set the sofa back on its feet, and replace the cushions.
- Steam clean the fabric
Fill a steam cleaner with water and upholstery detergent, referring to the instruction manual and the directions on the detergent bottle. Attach the upholstery nozzle to the cleaner, and move it over the sofa in parallel strokes. Press the detergent button to dispense soapy water onto a small section of fabric, and rinse it with pure water. To dry the fabric, pass the nozzle over it without pressing any buttons. When the fabric feels dry, move on to the next area.
- Dry the sofa
Give the sofa several hours to dry.
