Iron skillets are a great tool for the kitchen because they hold high temperatures well and cook a variety of food. It's important to properly clean and protect your iron skillet so it cooks to its full potential every time. To clean a cast iron skillet, you need a sink, kosher salt, two dish towels and vegetable oil.
Rinse off food particles
Use only warm water to rinse any remaining food off of the cast iron skillet. Don't use soap or cold water on the skillet.
Pour 1 cup of kosher salt in the warm skillet
Pick a course, large grained salt, and pour it into the cast iron skillet. Make sure the skillet is still warm.
Scrub the skillet with a dish towel
Roll a dish towel tightly, and scrub the kosher salt into the cast iron skillet. The course salt will remove any food that stuck to the skillet.
Rinse and dry the cast iron skillet
Rinse any remaining salt off of the cast iron skillet in warm water. Immediately dry the skillet with a new dish towel.
Oil the cast iron skillet
Use vegetable oil to lightly grease the cast iron skillet. This provides protection until the skillet's next use.
