To clean the bricks on an indoor fireplace, clean up any ashes in the fireplace and wash away the soot with an all-purpose cleaner. Rinse the bricks and repeat the cleaning process to remove any remaining stains.
To clean up sooty bricks in a fireplace, use the following steps:
- Clean up the ash
- Mix a cleaning solution
- Scrub away the soot
- Make a spot cleaner
Let the fireplace cool for several days and remove the ashes. Use a vacuum to suck up ashes or remove them with a fireplace shovel.
Mix 1/4 cup of all-purpose cleaner in 1 gallon of warm water. Dish soap can also make a good fireplace cleaner.
Use the cleaner and water mixture and a scrub brush to scrub away the soot. Go over the entire fireplace and then rinse off the cleaner. Dry the area and repeat the process if any stains persist.
For very persistent stains, mix 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar with enough water to form a paste. A mixture of soap and salt can also clean stains off of bricks. Apply the paste to the stain with a scrub brush and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse the paste away and let the area dry.
