To clean your basement, prepare cleaning materials in a container, remove all covers and shake off accumulated dust outdoors, and start wiping all covered items. Use a sponge dampened with warm, soapy water or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the outer part of the furnace and heater. To clean the floors, use a solution consisting of a teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid, a cup of ammonia and a gallon of warm water.
Wash the covers after shaking off dust. Once the furnace is clean, arrange drop cloths to protect the floors, and start scrubbing the walls with a natural sponge dampened by the ammonia and dishwashing liquid solution. Completely clean one wall before moving on to the next.
Get rid of mold by scrubbing it with warm, soapy water and rinsing with a wet cloth. Then, wipe the windows with a nylon-covered sponge dipped in a solution consisting of 2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid, 2 tablespoons of clear ammonia and 1 pint of rubbing alcohol. Wash the windows with water afterward, and wipe with a clean rag.
Clean the floor by spreading baking soda, which reduces odor, and then vacuuming and sweeping it into a dustpan using long strokes, starting from the corners to the middle of the room. Change the smoke detectors' batteries after vacuuming the detectors. Hand-wash or mop the floor to make it shine.
