Cleaning a chimney requires a chimney brush, chimney brush rods, a flashlight, a mirror and a ladder, depending on the cleaning method chosen. Tarps and drop cloths are useful for protecting the interior of the house, while buckets, brooms and shop vacuums are necessary for removing soot.
Personal protection equipment is also necessary, such as a dust mask, eye protection and gloves. A ladder is only necessary for cleaning the chimney from the roof. The "bottom up" cleaning method involves cleaning the chimney from the inside. While this method is considerably safer, more soot and debris enters the house, increasing the amount of required cleanup.
