In a study of 15 dishwashers, Good Housekeeping found that the following rack design elements are ideal for accommodating cookware: a knife holder for safely placing blades in the top rack, a flatware basket, a caddy for handheld utensils, a clip for holding plastic cups in place, and a bottom rack designed so that soiled sides of plates face the center for better cleaning. Energy efficiency and water conservation are also important characteristics.
