CertainTeed is a North American company that manufactures building materials with more than 60 manufacturing plants located all around the United States and Canada. The company is a subsidiary of the French company Compagnie de Saint Gobain SA. Among the building materials manufactured by CertainTeed are roofing materials, vinyl siding, railing, decking, insulation, gypsum and ceiling products.
CertainTeed was founded in 1904 in East St. Louis, Illi., by businessman named George Brown. The company was then known as General Roofing Corporation until 1917, when along with restructuring, it changed its name to Certain-teed Products Corporation.
From manufacturing roof materials, the company eventually started manufacturing other building materials such as asphalt shingles in 1913, gypsum wallboards in 1923, vinyl siding in 1969 and vinyl windows in 1979. Throughout the years, CertainTeed also underwent several ownership changes, mergers and acquisitions. In March 1988, CertainTeed was acquired by Compagnie de Saint Gobain SA.
Apart from the products already mentioned, the company also manufactures fencing, pipes, PVC trim, fiber cement siding and foundations. As of March 2015, CertainTeed has 65 manufacturing sites in the United States and Canada, employing about 6,000 employees in these facilities. The company's products are exported to more than 50 countries all around the world. It also owns patents to about 350 of its own products.
