How do you caulk windows?

Quick Answer

To caulk windows, clean each window frame, and apply the caulk to each exterior window joint in 2- to 3-foot sections. Dampen your finger, and press the caulk into the joint immediately after applying. Remove excess caulk, and allow the material to dry for at least 24 hours.

  1. Clean the window

Use a putty knife to remove old caulk and loose paint on the exterior window frame, and wipe the window with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. Allow the window to dry before applying the new caulk.

  2. Apply the caulk

Cut the tip of the caulk tube off at the correct bead size, and place it in the caulk gun. Hold the applicator gun at a 45-degree angle, and apply a 2- to 3-foot bead of caulk along the joint. If the caulk isn't directed into the joint, change the angle of the applicator slightly. After applying each section of caulk, dip your finger in water, and use your finger to press the caulk deeper into the joint. Repeat this process until each joint has been sealed.

  3. Remove excess caulk

Remove any excess caulk immediately, and allow the product to cure for at least 24 hours.
