Many municipalities collect old freezers during heavy trash pickup, and some state energy offices and local electric companies offer recycling programs for old appliances. When a new freezer has been purchased, many retailers pick up and recycle the old one. Scrap metal recyclers also might want an old freezer.
The Environmental Protection Agency runs the Responsible Appliance Disposal program, and retailers participating in the program recycle or reclaim metals, plastic, mercury and other components in household appliances. When dealing with a retailer or a scrap metal collector, confirm that they recycle the old freezers and that they do not resell them.
