As of March 2015, there were no refrigerator manufacturers producing a model controlled by a remote control. There were mobile phone apps, however, that notified refrigerator owners if their doors were left open.
Although smart appliances are increasingly becoming mainstream, smart refrigerators are still in the developmental stage. Companies such as Whirlpool and LG not only feature refrigerators that alert owners about open doors or power outages, they also communicate inventories to owners that can be used in the creation of shopping lists. Another common feature of refrigerators that communicate via smart app is a temperature notification that lets owners know the current internal temperatures of their refrigerator and freezer.
