Beadboard adds cottage-like flair while offering easy installation. Before buying it, consider the following elements that affect the overall finished look: style, profile and application. Beadboard with wider "boards" typically looks less busy when it is used in a large space. To achieve a farmhouse look, select paneling with 1 5/8-inch V-bead or 2 1/2-inch V-bead. The profile of the panels is also important to achieve optimal durability and the look of real beadboard. Look for panels that are at least 1/4-inch thick with well-defined beads. The intended spot for installation is also important to consider, particularly if beadboard is going in a bathroom, which requires moisture-resistant material, or outside, which requires materials that are graded for outdoor use.
Originally, beadboard was created board-by-board, which was time consuming. Modern beadboard panels take a fraction of the time to install and are typically milled to look like genuine, traditional beadboard. Look for panels that have a crisp profile that makes the beadboard look more like individual boards rather than a panel.Learn more about Building Materials
