Several websites feature bunk bed plans for free or at nominal cost. These plans range from simple to complex. Look for plans that include a list of materials and tools along with detailed step-by-step building instructions. The most helpful plans also include illustrated diagrams.
Classic bed bunk plans provide instructions on how to build a two-story set of single beds stacked one on top of the other. The beds are separated by four vertical beams of solid wood with two or more horizontal wood pieces between them. The bottom bunk is open while the top bunk is secured all around by long wood planks, which prevent the occupant from accidentally falling out. Within this basic design framework are numerous variations.
Another option, the L-shape plan, places the lower bunk in a horizontal position instead of the usual identical vertical position. This creates additional space to store a small dresser or storage chest. Mix and match a twin bed with a full bunk bed, and build storage drawers underneath the bottom. Plans are also available for a single bed design that sits on the second tier accessed by a ladder. The space underneath is filled with a regular twin bed, storage drawers or a small desk.
