You can make homemade flea shampoo with ingredients found at most grocery stores and an hour of preparation time. Many commercial flea shampoos sold in stores contain the deadly toxin pyrethrin. VetInfo recommends that pet owners create a homemade flea shampoo for their pets as a safe and healthy alternative.
Obtain the ingredients
First, purchase lavender-scented Dawn dishwashing detergent. Then obtain white vinegar or apple-cider vinegar. Finally, purchase filtered water.
Mix the ingredients
Mix 2 cups of warm water with 1/2 cup of white or apple cider vinegar in a large spray bottle. Add 1/4 cup of the lavender-scented Dawn. Secure the lid and nozzle on the container and gently shake until bubbles form.
Bathe your pet
After the bubbles have receded, wet your pet with warm water. Once thoroughly wet, spray your animal with the homemade flea shampoo. Work the shampoo into your pet's fur until a thick, soapy lather forms. Take care that you don't get any of the shampoo into the pet's eyes. Let the mixture soak on your pet for 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with warm water.
After your pet's bath
Thoroughly dry your pet with a towel. Use a flea comb to remove any remaining fleas. After your pet has dried completely, brush as you normally would.
