Founded in 1953 by Irwin Chase and his father, Martin, the Ann & Hope Company opened its first store in an old textile mill in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The store and building were named for the Ann and Hope, a ship that was lost off the coast of Rhode Island in 1806. The Chases first manufactured ribbon in the building. They eventually sold their stock at discount to other building tenants when a competitor produced a lower-cost ribbon. The success of the ribbon sale led the Chases to buy and sell other types of merchandise at discount, thus establishing Ann & Hope as a discount retailer. In addition to the curtain and bath outlet stores, the second and third generations of the company operate Dollar Outlet and Garden Outlet stores.
