It is recommended that a washer be moved only in an upright position. Moving the machine on its side can cause the tub to move out of alignment and may alter the machine's functionality.
The inner and outer tubs can also bump against each other if the washing machine is moved on its side, which can lead to loose support pads and chipping of the tub.
After 1995, GE began shipping washing machine units with moving rods that kept the tub in place during any relocation. The rod must be removed in order to use the machine, but it can be saved and reused for future moves.
