On all keyed doors with cylinders, whether on residences or automobiles, the cylinders can be replaced. The size and shape of some brands may vary, with some models being interchangeable, but generally the replacement procedures are similar.
Cylinders that are installed in residential doors with keyless-entry security systems or on cars with anti-theft security systems can be more difficult to replace. Automotive door keys with encoded chips may require more than just standard cylinder changes, such as chip encoding and reprogramming of on-board computers and theft prevention sensors. Some home security keyless-entry locks have no cylinder, but instead have wired and wireless access to change locking codes.
