Instructions on how to install an earthquake gas shutoff valve are posted on the SoCalGas and PGE websites. Other information about shutoff valves is also available on NW Natural's website. Each of these websites list legal information, basic mechanical information and information on choosing a valve.
Federal, state and local laws may prevent the average home owner from installing their own shutoff valves. In California, all shutoff valves must be approved by the state. Shutoff valves must be placed only on the customer's portion of the gas line. The gas company must be contacted any time gas must be turned off or on during any utility or construction work.
