It is possible to install wood flooring on top of concrete as long as some type of moisture vapor barrier and sub-floor is installed first. Users should always check the concrete floor for moisture before installing wood flooring.
To check for moisture, place a sheet of clear plastic over the section of concrete, and tape the sides down. Leave the sheet for 24 hours. If there are indications of moisture on the underside of the plastic sheet, then wood flooring is not a good option for the space.
Begin installing wood flooring by first installing a moisture barrier. Moisture barrier options include sheets of polyethylene plastic and pliable moisture sealant. Next cover the entire section of concrete with plywood. Install the wood flooring by nailing it directly to the plywood sub floor.
