As of July 2015, homemade smoker plans are online at The At Home Welder and Mother Earth News. The smoker plans at the DIY Ready website are for a small smokehouse.
The smoker at The At Home Welder site begins with two 55-gallon steel drums and stainless rods. Required tools include welding equipment, an angle grinder and an abrasive chop saw. The Mother Earth News smoker is much smaller. Its primary components are a 12- to 16-inch clay pot and an electric hot plate. Only basic tools, such as a drill, are required.
DIY Ready's smoker is made from wood pallets, aluminum flashing, corrugated tin and aluminum screen. This project needs a reciprocal saw with bimetal blade and a drill gun.
