People can dispose of old mattresses by giving them to friends and family, places of worship and shelters. Some thrift stores and charities also accept used mattresses. FreeCycle.org, Craigslist and the Earth911 recycling locator also help pinpoint places and mattress recyclers for disposal.
Some mattress retailers have take-back programs, so interested consumers should call the store from which they bought a mattress and inquire about any such programs. A local Salvation Army may also do mattress pickup. Mattresses can also be broken down, and components, such as the steel coils and foam, can be recycled individually. The steel cage, wood frame and cotton outer layer in a boxspring are also recyclable.
