To declutter your home, work through one area at a time and sort through each item. Split the items into keep, sell, donate, relocate and throw-away piles. Place every item in the room in one of the piles to ensure you go through everything.
Starting in one area of the home helps you focus on decluttering and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Completely finishing one area gives you the motivation to continue moving through the house. For a small room, such as a laundry room or bathroom, tackling the whole room in one decluttering session is an option. For larger rooms, choose one section of the room to focus on. Move through each zone of the room until you finish the job.
Look at each item realistically to determine if you should keep it or get rid of it. If you haven't used the item recently and can't think of any occasion coming up soon for which it would be useful, put it in the donate, sell or toss pile. If you don't want to mess around with selling items, stick with the donate and toss piles. As the piles fill, make a trip to the trash can or to a donation location to get the clutter out of the house.
