Many manufacturers provide asphalt shingles in custom colors. An asphalt roof's color comes from the granules that coat the shingles, and the different colors mix together to create many unique and beautiful shades.
These granules are made of crushed igneous rock. A series of screens sort the particles for uniform size and artificial dyes color them to the consumer's specification. A high-temperature oven cures the dyes and creates a durable finish for the granules.
Finally, a surface-treatment helps the individual granules adhere to the tacky surface of the shingles. The manufacturer mixes the granules to produce a range of custom colors.
