Many air purifiers include an ionizer option as part of the unit's air cleaning features. Producing negative ions is an efficient way to clean the air of unwanted odors and allergens. When the ionizer function is turned on, it disperses negative ions into the air, which attach to smoke, dust, pollen and pet dander. These particles become larger, which in turn, traps them inside of the unit's air filter. Some trapped particles land on the floor and are easily vacuumed away. Changing the dirty filter before running the ionizer is recommended. A dirty filter causes the ionizer to blow trapped particles back into the room.
Air ionizers inside of air purification units produce various amounts of ozone gas as a byproduct of ionization. Breathing low amounts of ozone can produce negative health symptoms such as coughing, chest pains and throat irritation. Exposure to ozone gas may also worsen asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases. The safety of air ionizers is inconclusive, but the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association recommend avoiding ionizers that produce ozone.Learn more about Appliances
