The North American Technician Excellence Consumer Education Center recommends that consumers look for HVAC companies in their area who hire certified technicians. In addition, consumers can check for lists of local companies with the Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, and state, county or city professional organizations.
While many people rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and other trusted sources familiar with heating and cooling companies, there are criteria to use when studying ads in the phone book, in newspapers and online that help consumers choose a company that hires qualified technicians. First, look for a company that has been in business for a number of years. Longevity is one indication of an acceptable level of service.
Next, look for companies that are registered with the local chamber of commerce, local merchants’ groups and the Better Business Bureau. Like other professionals, HVAC contractors can join these organizations, submit testimonials on their own behalf and solicit new business under the aegis of the organization. Any claims to membership or use of logos should be confirmed by the organization represented. Also, check companies’ service ratings with these same professional groups to see what kinds of complaints, if any, consumers have made.
