Set the vacuum's brush to a high setting, and make sure the bag or canister is less than half-full. Vacuum both sides of the rug thoroughly in a V pattern.
Bring the rug outside or into your shower. Wet the rug with a garden hose or shower head.
Fill a bucket with cold water. Mix 1/4 cup of a mild cleanser with the water. Use a sponge to spread the cleanser across the surface of the rug.
Read the instructions on the bottle of the cleanser. If it states that it does not need to be rinsed, do not rinse the cleanser off the rug. Otherwise, use the garden hose or shower head to rinse the rug clean.
Lay the rug flat on a clean surface. Lay the towels along the entire surface of the rug to absorb the moisture. Roll up the rug and the towels together to squeeze the excess moisture into the towels. Unroll the rug and remove the towels. Lay the rug out in the sun to dry.
