Mix a solution of 13 3/4 cups of water and 2 1/4 cups of chlorine bleach, and test the deck for colorfastness by applying a small amount of the solution to a hidden part of the deck. Allow the solution to remain for 15 minutes before rinsing, and examine the area for color changes. If no changes occur, water the plants nearby plants thoroughly, and dampen the deck with plain water.
While the deck is still damp, use a broom or mop to apply the bleach solution. After 15 minutes, rinse the deck using a garden hose. Direct the runoff into a sanitary sewer to prevent the cleaning solution from damaging plants or entering nearby water systems.
To clean a deck using oxygen bleach, mix 1/2 cup of powdered oxygen bleach with 1 gallon of hot water, and stir well to dissolve the oxygen bleach.
