Clorox bleach is not recommended for cleaning the brewing mechanism of a coffee pot. It is acceptable to use a mild bleach and water solution to clean the outside surface of a coffeemaker or filter.
Cleaning a coffeemaker monthly helps eliminate hard-water deposits that can leave coffee with an unpleasant taste. The best way to clean a coffeemaker is to add a solution made up of half white vinegar and half water to the reservoir. Then, the coffeemaker should be turned on, allowing several cups to run through. The coffeemaker should be turned off for one hour, then turned back on to allow the rest of the mixture to run through. Plain water must then be run through the coffeemaker until the vinegar odor is gone.
