It is possible for homeowners to clean their own air ducts, but experts like Bob Vila do not recommend it. Duct cleaning requires specialized tools, such as high-powered industrial vacuums, in order to be completed properly.
Without professional duct cleaning equipment, homeowners can only reach the ends of their ducts. While this might remove some dust and other contaminants, it does not reach the central parts of the infrastructure.
In most cases, air ducts do not require cleaning. There are exceptions, however, such as after an extensive home renovation that produces significant dust or when a homeowner suffers from allergies or asthma that could only be explained by the indoor air quality.
