Toilets for handicapped individuals are available for purchase in brick-and-mortar plumbing retail locations and online from Lowe's and The Home Depot. Each store offers a wide selection of toilets that comply with the guidelines set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
As of 2015, Lowe's provides a variety of toilets from KOHLER, AquaSource, American Standard and many other top brands. Toilets are available in many different colors and configurations as well as elongated or round designs. The Home Depot offers a selection of ADA-compliant toilets featuring electric waterless designs as well as standard one-piece toilets and toilet-and-bowl combination sets. The Home Depot provides free shipping to its brick-and-mortar stores for many products available only for purchase online.
ADA-compliant toilets must follow the guidelines established to ensure ease of use by those in wheelchairs. These guidelines include a maximum seat height 17 to 19 inches above the floor for adult toilets and 11 to 17 inches above the floor for toilet seats designed for children. The ADA also mandates other requirements for compliance, including grab bars placed so that those in wheelchairs can fully grip them when attempting to sit on or rise from the toilet, as well as toilet paper dispensers installed a minimum of 14 inches and a maximum of 19 inches above the floor.
