Retailers that sell self-defrosting freezers include Best Buy, Sears and Home Depot. Brands such as Danby, Frigidaire and Whirlpool make self-defrosting freezers as of 2015.
Most upright freezers are available with the self-defrost feature, while most chest freezers can only be defrosted manually. This feature, also known as auto-defrost or frost-free, enables a freezer to melt ice buildup occasionally without any effort from the user. The water from the defrosting process generally evaporates by itself.
Self-defrost freezers generally cost more than those without the option. Self-defrosting freezers use more energy than manual defrost freezers, but they require less time and effort for maintenance.
