Hamilton Beach percolators are sold by a variety of major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy. As of February 2015, the manufacturer sells this style of coffee maker for approximately $50.
As of 2015, Hamilton Beach offers two 12-cup percolator models. Both feature a detachable power cord that can be removed once the coffee is brewed to allow for easier pouring and storage. An indicator light turns on when the coffee is finished, and then the percolator switches to a warm setting to keep the coffee hot. Both percolators feature a permanent stainless steel filter basket, so disposable paper filters are not necessary.
Model 40614 has a viewing window to check on the water level or coffee, a lid that twists to lock into position and a cool-to-the-touch handle. The 40616 model does not have a locking lid or a viewing window.
A coffee percolator has a lower chamber for the water, and the coffee grounds go into the basket or chamber at the top. The two sections are connected by a vertical tube. The water is heated from the bottom, and when it boils, it rises through the tube and into the chamber with the coffee grounds. Once it cools, it moves back down to the bottom chamber and cycles through again until the brewing process is complete.
