Build a storage bench seat by constructing and trimming out the seat box and installing the seat lid. The project is estimated to take 18 hours and requires a circular saw, reciprocating saw, miter saw, stud finder, level, drill, hammer and nail set.
To make the four sides of the bench seat, rip two 16-inch strips from a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood using a circular saw. Cut the strips into four panels, two 69 1/2 inches long and two 15 1/2 inches long. Assemble the box using glue and 1 5/8-inch deck screws.
Attach panel molding to the seat by cutting seven 16-inch strips of 1x4 wood, four pieces of 10 3/4 inch 1x4 wood and four pieces of 30 1/4 inch 1x4 wood. Glue and nail the 1x4 pieces to the edges of the box and on both sides of each corner.
Next, install the hinge support to the inside of the box. Use a 2x4 screwed to a 3 1/2-inch-wide strip of plywood. Cap and trim the box by cutting a piece of 1x2 to 71 inches. Glue and nail it to the top edge of the box front. Use two 16 1/4-inch pieces to cap the sides.
Attach the lid to the box using three European cabinet hinges.
