How Do You Build a Screened-in Porch?

Build a screened-in patio by laying a solid foundation and structuring your frame. Then, set-up the roof and build your doors. Finally, put up the screens and secure the awnings.

  1. Set your foundation

Mark the perimeter of your foundation with string. Next, remove the pavers and install a trench about 8 inches deep and 8 inches wide. Fill the trench with less than an inch of gravel and place your foundation timbers. Secure them with compacted soil and replace the pavers.

  2. Build your frames

Notch all of your 6 by 6 and 4 by 6 vertical posts. Next, mark the location for each post on the foundation timber. Drill into the bottom of the posts, as well as in the timber and set in the drift pins. Place the laminated beam to the ready-made notches, secure with washers, and tack seal. Drop the posts into the drift pins and properly secure the frame. Frame the roof by setting the rafters and securing each with deck screws.

  3. Assemble your screen

Construct your doors with 2 by 4s and 2 by 6s. Use a circular saw to make lap joints. Sand the joints and glue them. Next, set the screens and hold them in place with screws. Finally, set up the awning by sliding the tie-down bars into the rafter ends.
