Full Answer

Construct the footboard using four pieces of 39-inch long, 1-by 4-inch lumber and eight pieces of 25-inch long 2-by- 4-inch lumber. The four 39-inch pieces are the base and top of the headboard. They hold the eight 25-inch pieces that are situated vertically and held in place by the 39-inch pieces. Secure the 25-inch pieces to the 39-inch ones with brad nails. Attach two 25-inch long 4-by 4-inch posts to either side of the footboard.

The headboard for the bed frame is built the same way as the footboard. However, instead of using 25-inch long 4-by 4-inch posts for the bed legs, use 37-inch ones. Connect the headboard and the footboard components with two lengths of 75 1/2-inch long 2-by 6-inch lumber pieces and screws. The 75 1/2-inch side rails support the slats of the bed frame. Attach a smaller piece of 2-by 2-inch wood railing to the inside of both side rails using screws to hold the bed slats.

Lay 17 1-by 4-inch bed slats across the open face of the bed frame in between the side rails. The slats should be 39 3/4-inches long. Secure the slats with screws.
