  1. Cut the wood

To make a 5 1/2-inch square box, use a tape measure to mark four cuts on a 1-by-6-by-4-inch board. You need two 5 1/2-inch pieces and two 4-inch pieces. Cut each piece from the board. If you want to add a bottom, cut one 4-inch square piece.

  2. Glue the box

Add a bead of glue along the long edge of one of the short pieces. Align one of the long pieces along the glued edge, and secure the pieces with corner clamps.

  3. Nail the corners

At the corners, hammer in 4D finishing nails spaced a couple of inches apart.

  4. Finish the box

If you want to add a bottom, add glue on two edges of the box, and clamp it to the glued side pieces. Secure the bottom and sides with finishing nails. Glue, clamp and nail the remaining two side pieces with the other two sides of the box and the bottom, if applicable. This project can easily be scaled for larger boxes. For the short sides, just remember to subtract the width of the boards from the width of the box.
