According to Shaw Floors, nylon carpets are the most versatile of the different types of carpet fibers, and polyester carpets are typically stain-resistant. They are both excellent choices for carpets but have unique characteristics that may make one or the other better suited for a particular room or location.
Shaw Floors states that since the 1960s, nylon carpets have been the most frequently utilized. Out of all the available types of carpet fibers, nylon is the most versatile and can accommodate for a large variety of carpet styles. Nylon fibers can be found in a wide range of cut pile and loop pile patterns. Nylon is also exceptionally soft, durable and receptive to dyeing when the need for color uniformity arises. However, one of the drawbacks of nylon carpet is that it is not inherently stain-resistant; a majority of nylon carpet comes with stain-resistant treatment protection.
The benefits of polyester carpets include exceptional softness, color clarity and natural stain and fade resistance. Polyester carpets are not as durable as nylon, but as of 2014, technological advances have made polyester fibers much stronger. As polyester is not as resilient, Shaw Floors recommends this type of carpet for rooms with low-to-medium traffic, such as bedrooms.
