Conversation areas with fire pits and water features are two ways to increase the functionality and enjoyment of the backyard. These two design ideas are ideal weekend projects.
A conversation area includes a seating area with comfortable chairs surrounding a focal point, such as a fire pit or water feature. Separate this area from the rest of the backyard by building a gravel patio area.
To make a patio area, define the size of the area and remove the sod. Next, install edging material, such as brick, metal edging or stones around the perimeter of the patio. Lay down landscape material to prevent grass and weeds from cropping up in the area. Finally, install 2 inches of crushed rock, and top with 3 inches of pea gravel to complete the patio.
Once the patio is complete, place a bubbling fountain or a fire pit in the center of the patio and place chairs around the area. Complete the area by installing outdoor lighting, such as pillar candles or solar-powered garden lights.
