Appliances that are the most cost-effective to own are large appliances that have been designed to be energy-efficient, such as those rated with an Energy Star label. While an energy-efficient appliance is typically more expensive to purchase, the energy savings can reduce monthly utility bills over its lifetime.
Some of the most cost-effective appliances to purchase are typically major appliances, such as refrigerators or clothes washers. A modern refrigerator can save up to $100 a year in utility cost reduction, of which an additional 15 percent can be achieved when an Energy Star-qualified model is purchased, as of 2015. Refrigerators featuring a freezer on top are also more energy-efficient compared to a side-by-side model.
