As of 2015, companies that offer residential dishwashers with sanitizing cycles include Bosch, Frigidaire, General Electric, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Maytag and Samsung. These brands all produce dishwashers that carry an NSF certification, which means the sanitizing cycle eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria.
Dishwashers that feature a sanitizing cycle must have a rinse cycle that reaches at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to kill the influenza virus. Some models operate at 160 degrees throughout the cycle, compared to the 120 degrees of a normal wash cycle. The sanitizing feature is an effective way to sterilize baby bottles and other plastic items that are dishwasher-safe.
