Dehumidifiers help dry out air and prevent mold infestations, according to the Environmental Protective Agency. Once a mold infestation has occurred, using a dehumidifier is not enough to get rid of it. Cleaning the affected area is necessary.
Controlling moisture is the key to preventing mold infestations. Other helpful measures include fixing leaks or places where water is seeping into a wall or floor, using exhaust fans to ventilate bathrooms and kitchens and using vapor barriers to keep moisture out. Remove small mold infestations by washing the affected area with a solution of 1 part bleach to 8 parts water. Larger infestations may require removing and destroying infested carpeting, drywall, ceiling tiles and wood.
