Motion-sensing trash cans such as those produced by simplehuman and EKO are the most advanced trash cans widely available as of 2016. These trash cans open with a wave of the hand in their vicinity, allowing users to easily pitch in trash without touching the can itself.
Though not in wide production, the Smart Trash Can produced by Japanese inventor Minoru Kurata is likely the most advanced trash can ever made. The Smart Trash Can uses a combination of sensors and wheels to catch any trash thrown at it. However, the prototype versions of this trash can were only about 20 percent accurate at catching garbage.
