The company was originally founded in 1921 by Charles Ferguson under the name Home Electric Lighting Company, which was eventually abbreviated to Homelite. The company was created after Ferguson invented a lightweight portable gasoline-powered electric generator. In 1949, Homelite made history when it designed and produced the world's first one-man chainsaw. The company then released the world's first lightweight chainsaw in 1963. This model, known as the Homelite XL-12, featured an aluminum-alloy frame and is notable for being one of the chainsaws used in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" film series.
As of 2015, Homelite Corporation is a subsidiary of Hong Kong based Techtronic Industries. Although the company originally began by producing portable electric generators, it has mostly shifted to producing residential lawn and garden equipment, such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers and brush cutters.
