A 28-inch electric range is slightly smaller than the standard size, which is 30 inches wide, according to HGTV. The oven capacity for a standard range is five cubic feet.
A standard-size range is suitable for a large family of at least four people. Smaller groups need ovens with capacities between two and four cubic feet. Models that are freestanding are finished on all sides, but slide-ins or drop-ins are only finished in the front because they are tucked between cabinets, says HGTV.
Prices for compact ranges, as of March 2015, can vary significantly, from over $500 to over $1,000. The cost of a basic standard-size electric range begins at $350, but more complex ranges with dual-fuel range and convection heating run $2,000 or more.
