Independence Day, which commemorates French Cameroun's independence from France, falls on Jan. 1. As a result, the U.S. Embassy also observes the day as a holiday but because of the American New Year's Day holiday. The Prophet's Birthday, the birthday of Muslim prophet Muhammad, falls on the 12th day of the Islamic month of Rabi' al-awwal. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, this holiday can occur in any Gregorian calendar month.
Youth Day, a holiday that celebrates young Cameroonians, always happens on Feb. 11. Good Friday, which commemorates the death of Jesus Christ, occurs on the Friday before Easter Sunday. Ascension Day, which commemorates Christ's ascension, occurs 39 days after Easter Sunday.
National Day, a holiday that commemorates the uniting of the former British and French Cameroonian territories, falls on May 20. Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim celebration of Ramadan, occurs on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
