The Gaylord National Resort’s ICE! at National Harbor, Maryland, is an annual winter holiday attraction created entirely of ice hand-sculpted by international artisans. Visitors are allowed to roam in, around and on top of the interactive holiday scenes.
ICE!, which is produced in association with Gaylord Hotels, uses approximately 5,000 blocks of ice weighing an estimated 2 million pounds. The temperature in and around the ice sculptures is kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Any guests not adequately attired for the extreme cold are loaned oversized winter coats to wear while touring the grounds.
The idea for ICE! originated with the ice lantern festivals of Imperial China. The modern version is based on China’s annual Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, and the artisans creating ICE! are natives of Harbin.
