Memorial Day in the United States is celebrated on the last Monday of May. In 2016, Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 30.
Memorial Day is set aside to commemorate the men and women who have died while serving for the United States military. Memorial Day traditions include flying national flags at half-staff from dawn until 12:00 p.m. and to visit the graves or memorials of deceased loved ones, both civilian and military. Memorial Day is a federal holiday, meaning that all government offices are closed as well as schools and many places of business. The holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day.
